Prestatyn Channel 6 Radio – 10 years in!
It is with equal measures of delight and astonishment that we welcome you all to this, the celebration of a decade of Midnight Hour Weekenders, here at Pontins, Prestatyn Sands. I use the word astonishment as it’s quite unbelievable that we have been making our way up to the North Wales coast for a whole 10 years now. It seems only yesterday that word spread rapidly of a “new kid on the block” on the soul calendar back in 2001. Since its inception, the event has built a big reputation for providing the best in live acts and top DJ’s across its remit of soul inspired dance music. The role call is impressive and I’m sure Messer’s Fletcher, Poole and Coddington will elaborate in their respective program editorials.
Of course here at Prestatyn, Channel 6 Radio is a key part of the weekender experience. In days gone by it seemed radio was a feature at most weekenders, and I certainly considered it an important aspect of my weekends full of soul. So from a personal perspective, I was disappointed when it appeared that radio had taken a back seat at such events as we entered the 21st Century. No surprise then that I was delighted to find that the Prestatyn events were to feature a 24-hour onsite radio station from day one. Having presented on the radio since those early days, I can remember various incarnations of the now ubiquitous “radio room”, which currently has a settled home in a secret location within the venue walls. Well alright, it’s not that secret at all, but it sounds good! Anyway, we remain confident that the Prestatyn events provide an unrivalled musical mix and level of professionalism via Channel 6 Radio, and as such this event sets the standards to be judged by in this respect.
It was late in 2007 that Colin Brown and I were approached to take over the reigns of Channel 6. I thought long and hard about this for a good few seconds before saying yes!!
So, from a solid foundation built over the previous 6 years, Colin and I set about planning our first take of the Channel 6 experience for Midnight Hour 2008: Colin looking after the rare/60’s/R&B side, with me taking care of all things remotely modern in the musical sense. Now some four years on, and through various trials and tribulations, we think we are now getting the recognition for the radio that it deserves, with a standard of both presentation and studio equipment that matches that already well established around the various arenas.
The essence of the radio for Colin and I is that it should provide an appropriate musical backdrop (excuse the pun!) for your weekend when you’re not in the arenas. We see part of the objective being to program a fair proportion of music which may not be heard out and about around the various dance rooms. It is also important to us that we maintain a balance of DJ’s which represents collectors and aficionados who rarely get the opportunity to ply their wares, alongside the more established and experienced radio presenters. One thing we do guarantee, is that whatever their background and musical preference, they all have a free-hand to chose from deep within their collections.
So with that as the ethos, the last four years have seen some great shows delivered from a wide range, and ever growing, list of DJ’s and collectors from the national and international world of soul music. This hasn’t been confined to merely playing the platters, but has also seen many great interviews take place with the heroes and heroines of the music we all love. Add to this the latest development, an account at www.podomatic.com, where shows and interviews from past events nestle alongside live DJ sets from various arenas (a big thank you to our friends at Starpoint Radio for these recordings), and I think you will agree we really do provide an unparalleled experience. Check out www.soul-weekenders.co.uk for links in to all this good stuff.
It’s worth considering that we span seven decades of music here on Channel 6. No mean feat I’m sure you will agree, with something on offer for all tastes. We need to thank all of the presenters, to numerous to mention over the past 10 years of Channel 6, as it is they that have provided us with this musical smorgasbord.
Before we close with final words of thanks, we feel that we must issue a warning to those of a nervous disposition: regular attendees and listeners to Channel 6 will tell you that the roster always has its fair share of characters on board, so ritual humiliation and various other tomfooleries always prevail. If Mr Poole invites you into the studio for a chat, be afraid, be VERY afraid. You have been warned!!
Finally then we must remind you that the success of the station is in no small part due to the assistance of both Pontins and SWA staff, who now understand exactly what we want before we want it! So a massive thank you to the Pontins team, for their support both before and during each event, and to Oli and the rest of the SWA guys, for the studio set-up and the support throughout the weekend.
All that’s left then is for Colin and me to welcome all our DJ’s for Midnight Hour 2011 to the Channel 6 studio, and thank them all for their time and effort in bringing you an alternative soundtrack to the weekend when you’re taking a break from the action in the arenas. Check the comprehensive “what’s on” guide in the centre pages of the programme to make sure you select your own essential listening, ensure your TV is tuned correctly to Channel 6 Radio, and enjoy what’s on offer back at your apartments (oh er missus!).
Have yourselves a bostin’ few days celebrating 10 years of your favourite weekender, and remember, if you see one of the Channel 6 presenters at the bar, buy them a drink and give them a pat on the back for the part they’re playing in delivering the Prestatyn experience. Not forgetting the two organisers of course………mine’s a lager!
Here’s to the next 10!
